SONIPAT: A six-month-old boy was seriously injured after being attacked by a pet pit bull in Sonipat’s Sikka Colony on September 14. The incident, captured on CCTV, shows the dog lunging at the infant, pulling him from his aunt’s arms and dragging him along the roadside.According to the family, the child was in his aunt’s lap when the pit bull suddenly came out of a nearby house after its gate was opened. The dog attacked the woman and grabbed the infant, knocking him to the ground before dragging him by the jaw.The CCTV footage shows people in the vicinity rushing to the child’s rescue. A young man eventually intervened and managed to free the infant by holding the dog’s jaws. The dog reportedly released the child after around 30 seconds.The child’s grandmother, Nirmala Devi, said the infant suffered deep injuries to his face, mouth and hand. According to the family, more than 20 stitches were required to treat his wounds. The child’s aunt was also injured while attempting to rescue him, the family said.The infant was initially taken to a private hospital in Delhi. He was subsequently shifted to PGIMS Rohtak after the family faced mounting medical expenses and because of the extent of his injuries.Dr SK Singhal, director of PGIMS Rohtak, said the child was brought to the institute on Thursday after sustaining extensive injuries in the dog attack.“The child had been badly bitten and had multiple wounds. He was brought to PGIMS Rohtak because of the severity of the injuries. His condition is improving and he is better than before,” Dr Singhal said.The child is currently receiving treatment at the hospital, and doctors have reported an improvement in his condition.Meanwhile, Sonipat police said no formal complaint had been received in connection with the incident so far.ASI Ravinder Singh, spokesperson for Sonipat Police, said, “We have not received any complaint yet. If a complaint is received, a case will be registered. As of now, no complaint has been filed.”The child’s family claims that the house from which the pit bull emerged has two pet dogs and alleges that adequate arrangements had not been made to prevent the animals from getting out.According to the family, the attack occurred moments after the house gate was opened, allowing the pit bull to suddenly rush outside and attack the child.The CCTV footage has brought the incident into sharp focus, showing the sequence of the attack and the efforts of bystanders to rescue the infant.While the child is currently recovering at PGIMS Rohtak, police said they will take further legal action if and when a formal complaint is submitted.
