During his press conference Thursday, Baltimore Ravens defensive coordinator Anthony Weaver either offered up some bulletin board material for the New Orleans Saints  — or paid quite the compliment to Tyler Shough. 

“He reminds me a little bit of a poor-man’s Josh Allen,” Weaver said of the quarterback.

Now, players don’t typically embrace being compared to other players — let alone a “poor man’s” version of anything. That said, Weaver praised Shough’s game by comparing him to the 2024 MVP who is regularly regarded as one of the best in the league. 

Weaver rejoined the Ravens this past offseason, but faced Shough as a rookie when he served as the defensive coordinator for the Miami Dolphins.

Against Miami, Shough threw for 239 yards, two touchdowns and an interception in a 21-17 loss. But Shough almost led New Orleans to a late-game comeback, and the performance left Weaver impressed.

“Has all the arm talent in the world and can run,” Weaver told reporters in Baltimore. “I don’t think he gets enough credit for how good an athlete he is.”

Saints offensive coordinator Doug Nussmeier said he did not interpret Weaver’s comments as a jab.

“Anytime you’re compared to somebody like Josh Allen, you’re a dang good player,” Nussmeier said. “So I think a lot of people take that as a compliment, but Tyler’s special in his own ways and obviously a lot of respect for Coach Weaver and what he does.”
