The abandonment of sex education lessons in schools in North Macedonia will put young people at greater risk of sexual- and gender-based violence, civil society campaigner Velimir Saveski told BIRN after the conservative government cancelled the rollout of optional classes to all ninth graders.
Sex education was introduced in 2021 as an optional topic for ninth graders in four schools in North Macedonia, under a pilot project approved by the then ruling Social Democrats.
It was due to be rolled out as an option for ninth graders in all general secondary schools in the country as of next year, before Education Minister Vesna Janevska announced this month a “deep revision” of the programme.
Janevska comes from the ranks of the conservative VMRO DPMNE party, which came to power in 2024; she insisted her move was based on public disquiet over the programme.
