Prime Minister La’aulialemalietoa Leuatea Polataivao Fosi Schmidt announced plans to build a township in Salelologa, Savaii, earlier this week during the groundbreaking ceremony for the construction of a privately owned hospital in the village.

The Prime Minister announced that US$35 million, equivalent to more than $100 million tala, has been approved by the Central Bank of Samoa to fund the project.

“Ua taoto le tupe fa’aagaga e tapena uma ai le tatou taulaga atoa lenei,” said the Prime Minister.

“Mo le silafia e $35miliona Amerika e ova atu ma le $100miliona Samoa lea ua amata ona fa’agaioi e toe faaleleia uma ai le maketi ma le anofale atoa o le tatou taulaga lea e lei uma na fai, lea na pasia I le tausaga lenei mai le faletupe tutotonu.”

He added that the plans include renovating the market, building another national hospital, and establishing branches of all Government ministries in Salelologa for the convenience of Savaii residents.

“Lea ua tou silasila ua amata ona tapena le Ofisa o le Faamasinoga, la foi ua tapena le tulaga o le falemai, lea foi ua tapena le nofoaga o le ofisa o leoleo, ua tapena foi nisi o ofisa uma o le malo ina ia faamautu iinei ia iloa ma ia mautinoa o le taulaga le mea lea, ia aua nei fai fai tuu, e fai le uma,” he said.

He also highlighted that the plans would mark a new beginning for the big island of Savaii.

“O le amataga lenei o le uluai fanua lea e tuaoi ma le itu auala lea e alu atu a inei le eleele o le malo lea e totoe e tau I le sami I le tolotolo lenei o le a faavasega uma ai atinae taua a le tatou malo, aua le atina’eina o le tatou motu I Salafai,” he said.

“E tasi lava le naunaugataiga ia tutusa le mea lae tupu I Apia ma le mea lea e tupu I Salelologa.”

The project is part of Samoa’s broader efforts to prepare for natural hazards and climate change, both of which pose ongoing threats to the island nation.

Stakeholder consultations for the project were held in July 2025.
