Government has lifted, with immediate effect, the suspension on the importation of selected livestock and livestock products from South Africa, following a review of the Foot-and-Mouth Disease (FMD) situation and applicable sanitary measures.

The Department of Livestock Services said the decision allows the controlled importation of live cloven-hoofed animals, red meat and pork, subject to strict veterinary requirements.

According to a notice issued yesterday, all consignments must meet conditions set out in the relevant veterinary import permits. 

These include traceability, surveillance, biosecurity, veterinary certification and compliance with FMD control measures.
