CHATSWORTH, Calif. (CNN) — Officials say a news helicopter crashed Tuesday night in a Los Angeles suburb, killing at least three people.

The KNBC helicopter crashed just before 7 p.m. Tuesday in Chatsworth, about 25 miles northwest of downtown Los Angeles. The crash occurred near an area where emergency crews and journalists were responding to a deadly bus collision earlier that evening.

KNBC anchor Colleen Williams said on air that the station lost contact with its helicopter team.

The Los Angeles Fire Department said three people died at the scene and paramedics took one person to a local hospital. That person’s condition is unknown.

The cause of the crash is unknown. Authorities have not said how many people were on the helicopter.

Los Angeles Fire Department Capt. Branden Silverman said one of the dead was a pedestrian in a parking lot. Los Angeles police officers pulled the person away from the fire.

Silverman said the helicopter was “pretty well destroyed.” He said authorities must search the wreckage to identify the aircraft and those killed.

Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass posted on X that she is devastated by the deaths and that her heart is with the families of those killed in both the bus collision and the helicopter crash.

The crash sparked a fire near several vehicles and two large cargo containers. Video from the scene showed flames and thick smoke.

The fire department said 56 firefighters extinguished the blaze, which damaged four vehicles and two storage containers.

The National Transportation Safety Board and the Federal Aviation Administration will investigate.

Federal Aviation Administration records show the aircraft was a 2004 Eurocopter AS350 B2, a popular single-engine utility helicopter.
