Panamanian President José Raúl Mulino announced that talks are continuing to advance the bill that seeks to expand benefits for retirees and pensioners, with the goal of having the initiative approved before the end of the current legislative period. Mulino explained that the meeting that began on Thursday continued on Tuesday, although he clarified that there is still no final decision on the content of the proposal.
Government Maintains Dialogue with Involved Sectors.
The president noted that, prior to a new stage of talks with the unions, exchanges have taken place between the various sectors related to the initiative. Among the participants he mentioned were representatives from the Chamber of Commerce, small pharmacies, retirees, and workers from Bocas del Toro.
“There is still no decision addressed, but we have already had exchanges among ourselves first, and then with the unions,” Mulino stated.
The president stressed that the goal is to reach a consensus that will allow for the presentation and approval of legislation that responds to the needs of retirees and pensioners.
Bill Must Move Forward Before Legislative Closure.
Mulino expressed his intention that the project be approved before October 31, the date on which the legislative period ends.
“We are going to try to pass a good law as soon as possible so that it is approved before October 31, which closes the legislative period,” the president stated.
The initiative is thus in a stage of dialogue between the Executive and the sectors that could be involved in the application of the new benefits.
They are Seeking a Consensus Proposal for Retirees.
The Government intends for the talks to help define a proposal that can move forward in the National Assembly before the legislative period ends. The bill is part of discussions related to expanding benefits for retirees and pensioners, a sector that has raised various demands related to their economic situation and quality of life.
