A 35-year-old man was beaten to death in Uttar Pradesh’s Ballia district while returning home on a motorcycle after buying items for worship, police said on Tuesday. A case has been registered against four people in connection with the incident.

Police said Umesh Chaurasia was attacked on Monday evening and later died of his injuries. Three police teams have been formed to arrest the accused, who are absconding, officials said.

According to the complaint, Chaurasia, a resident of Karni village, was returning home with fellow villagers Salim Ansari and Uttam Verma after purchasing worship items from Malipur Camp town.

Near a turn towards Kaithi Mathiya village, some people who were waiting for them intercepted the motorcycle and assaulted Chaurasia. Police said that after he fell from the motorcycle, he was hit on the head with a bamboo stick.

Chaurasia suffered serious injuries and was taken to the community health centre in Siyar, where doctors declared him dead. After receiving information about the incident, police officials, including Superintendent of Police Omvir Singh, inspected the spot.

Singh said a case had been registered against Vivek Yadav, Vipin Yadav, Pradyumn Yadav and Sundaram Singh under sections 103(1) (punishment for murder) and 352 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of peace) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita on the complaint of the deceased’s nephew, Chandan.

Police said an altercation involving verbal abuse had taken place between Chaurasia and the accused about three weeks ago. They added that the accused had gone to Rajasthan for work along with Chandan.

The body has been sent for post-mortem examination, police said, as efforts continue to trace the four accused named in the case.
