Sierra Leone’s First Lady, Mrs. Fatima Maada Bio, has arrived at Lungi International Airport following her recent engagement at the United Nations, where she presented a draft resolution on ending child, early and forced marriage.
Her return comes after the United Nations General Assembly adopted the resolution calling for the establishment of an International Day for the Elimination of Child, Early and Forced Marriage.
The landmark development has drawn attention to Sierra Leone’s efforts to strengthen the protection of girls and promote their rights, education and future.
Women and girls gathered at Sea Bird in Murray Town, Freetown, ahead of Mrs. Fatima Maada Bio’s arrival to welcome her and recognise her advocacy at the international level.
The First Lady’s UN engagement has further placed the campaign against child, early and forced marriage on the global agenda, with renewed calls for collective action to eliminate the practice.
Her arrival marks the beginning of a homecoming reception as supporters celebrate the UN milestone and her continued advocacy for the rights and protection of girls.
