on Friday called on Congress to expedite the Government’s request for legislative powers.

“I appeal to common sense, and the only thing I ask of both chambers is promptness, because that is what citizens are demanding of us, with good reason. They are asking us to make decisions more swiftly,” Fujimori stated.

“I respectfully ask both chambers and all committees to facilitate the debate and enable this,” she added in remarks to Exitosa radio.

The Head of State emphasized that the powers are not for the Government, but rather to ensure that Peruvian State services reach citizens more quickly and efficiently.

As she mentioned, the delegation of powers is aimed at strengthening mechanisms to combat citizen insecurity, responding more swiftly to the impact of El Niño phenomenon, and modernizing the State.

The top official underscored the importance of modernizing the State in the face of a situation that puts the population at risk, noting that it can currently take six days to declare a district in a state of emergency.

“The State cannot respond so slowly; that is why we have said that we need to simplify government decision-making,” she pointed out.

The Head of State indicated that she will not assume a pessimistic scenario regarding what Congress ultimately decides, but rather maintain a positive attitude.

Regarding El Niño phenomenon, the President said that cleanup, desilting, bridge reinforcement and riverbank protection works have begun to ensure the population’s safety.

The priority is to work together, Fujimori noted.

Therefore, the top official acknowledged the coordination achieved with regional and local governments and the private sector to strengthen cooperation in addressing El Niño.

In this regard, she announced that Japan will provide Peru with $10 million worth of machinery to address the impact of the aforementioned phenomenon.
