With JJ Buchanan’s iconic grab, the Wolverines (1-0) pulled a Hail Mary Houdini by escaping Ann Arbor with a victory over defending MAC champion Western Michigan on Sept. 5.
The stunning struggle has raised questions about the program in head coach Kyle Whittingham’s debut. Making matters worse, Michigan dropped out of the top 25 AP poll despite winning the game and entering the season ranked No. 16.
At the center of the Maize and Blue’s concerns is Underwood, who woefully underperformed relative to expectations, carrying over a troubling trend from last year’s freshman campaign.
Underwood finished 12 of 22 for 170 yards, one touchdown and one interception. He picked up 47 of those passing yards on the final Hail Mary of the game.
Whittingham was noncommittal when asked about Underwood’s long-term starting role in Ann Arbor. The UM QB brushed off the comments, stirring the pot even further heading into gameday.
It wasn’t just Underwood that raised alarms Week 1. Michigan’s offense looked lifeless at times, being stonewalled by an inferior MAC opponent on a handful of drives.
They mustered just 276 total yards of offense, including a minuscule 12 first downs. Perhaps most jarring was the time of possession, which saw the Wolverines have less than 20 minutes of football, while Western Michigan had just over 40 minutes.
The run game, a sure-fire staple in preseason chatter, was completely negated by a shockingly overwhelmed offensive line. Underwood led the team with 47 yards, while junior running back Jordan Marshall had 11 carries for 44 yards.
Savion Hiter, a highly regarded five-star freshman running back, was virtually non-existent, finishing with five carries for 15 yards.
Buchanan, a sophomore, finished with six receptions for a game-high 126 yards and one touchdown.

The Sooners return seven of their starters on defense from last season and are a seasoned bunch that was seventh in the nation in scoring defense in 2025. They also added former Michigan linebacker Cole Sullivan.
It marks the first time Oklahoma will play in the Big House. The Sooners are 2-0 all-time against the Wolverines, including a 1976 Orange Bowl victory and last year’s 24-13 triumph in Norman.
