Bagdhdad (IraqiNews.com) – Iraq’s Acting Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, Abdul Hussein Al-Mousawi, laid the foundation stone on Saturday for the British University in Baghdad, marking a major milestone in the country’s ongoing academic modernization.
The ground-breaking ceremony was held in Al-Jawahiri Residential City, situated in the Abu Ghraib district west of the capital, officially launching construction on a campus designed entirely around United Kingdom higher education benchmarks and curricula.
The institution is set to house four anchor colleges covering vital technical disciplines: the College of Pharmacy, the College of Data Science and Artificial Intelligence, the College of Engineering, and the College of Education, directly targeting emerging labor market deficits across both public and private sectors.
The inception of the British University arrives amid a broader, dynamic renaissance across Baghdad’s private education landscape, where demand for accredited foreign schooling has surged exponentially in recent years.
The capital has evolved into an active hub for premium international curricula, already hosting five fully accredited institutions delivering International Baccalaureate, American, and British tracks, including Baghdad British International School (BBIS), English International School Baghdad (EISB), and Cadmus International School.
This momentum is poised to accelerate further with major greenfield expansions on the horizon, most notably plans by the SABIS educational network to introduce an International School of Choueifat campus within the burgeoning Abu Ghraib corridor.
At the tertiary level, the British University project builds upon a proven institutional precedent established six years earlier with the founding of the American University of Iraq – Baghdad (AUIB). Since opening its doors in 2020, AUIB has earned widespread acclaim and deep institutional trust among Baghdad households, proving that local demand for rigorous, globally accredited campus environments is both robust and sustained.
By bringing a dedicated British collegiate model to the capital’s western growth zone, the initiative not only broadens academic diversity but also reflects a concerted national strategy to integrate world-class schooling infrastructure into Iraq’s next generation of master-planned residential cities.
