Tens of thousands of people marched through Amsterdam on Saturday to call on the government to end its reliance on fossil fuels, three days before the cabinet presents its annual budget plan.

Organisers the Klimaatcrisis Coalitie, an alliance of Greenpeace, Milieudefensie, Extinction Rebellion and around 200 other groups, said more than 40,000 people took part.

The 2.5 kilometre route ran from the Dam to Museumplein, with 43 organised blocs including a youth bloc, a tech bloc and one from trade union federation FNV.

ANP reported many placards had the word “klimaatdrammer” – the “climate nag” label prime minister Rob Jetten adopted as a badge of honour after a VVD MP used it against him in 2019.

The coalition wants the government to end fossil fuel subsidies and speed up the switch to wind and solar rather than nuclear. Spokeswoman Merel Fiets said early reports on the leaked budget were “not encouraging” and that current policy would not meet the climate targets.

Organisers said climate minister Stientje van Veldhoven was handed their demands at a press conference before the march but announced no new measures.
