Flags in the territory are flying at half staff today in remembrance of the 25th anniversary oof the terrorist attacks on the nation on September 11, 2001.

The Governor’s order to lower the flags of the United States and American Samoa today said the observance honors the nearly 3,000 lives lost and all those who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our nation.

Governor Pulaali’i Nikolao Pula also issued the following message:

“Today marks 25 years since the tragic events of September 11, 2001, a day that claimed nearly 3,000 innocent lives and forever changed our nation.

“On this solemn anniversary, we remember the men, women, and children whose lives were taken in New York City, at the Pentagon in Virginia, and aboard Flight 93 in Pennsylvania. We stand with the families who continue to carry the pain of their loss and honor the courage of the first responders and all those who stepped forward in the face of unimaginable tragedy.

“September 11 also reminds us of the resilience, unity, and patriotism that brought our nation together in the days and years that followed. Here in American Samoa, we join our fellow Americans across the United States in remembering those we lost and paying tribute to those who made the ultimate sacrifice.

“We also express our deepest gratitude to the brave men and women who continue to serve and protect the freedoms we cherish today.

“As we observe this 25th anniversary, may we take a moment to reflect, remember, and renew our commitment to the values that unite us as one people and one nation.

“We will never forget.

“May God bless the families of those we lost, may God bless the United States of America, and may God bless American Samoa.
