Meeting between Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan and European Commissioner for Equality, Preparedness and Crisis Management, Hadja Lahbib
Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan received today, at Victoria Palace, the European Commissioner for Equality, Preparedness and Crisis Management Hadja Lahbib.
The discussions focused on cooperation between Romania and the European Commission in the field of crisis management, strengthening preparedness and response capacity, enhancing European resilience, as well as promoting equal opportunities, inclusion and social resilience. An important topic of the meeting was Romania’s role in the European civil protection mechanisms, in the current security context.
European Commissioner Hadja Lahbib thanked Romania for its constant contribution to joint efforts through the EU Civil Protection Mechanism (UCPM), including by mobilizing teams and capabilities to fight wildfires in France, Greece and Serbia, as well as for the support granted in other emergency situations, including in the Gaza Strip.
Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan pointed out that Romania remains a stable and active partner in efforts to strengthen European emergency response capacity.
“Romania has an integrated and centralized intervention system, with specialized structures and the capacity to rapidly mobilize the necessary forces. Romania has also benefited from significant equipment financed through European funds, and this support has contributed to strengthening our intervention capacity. We thank the EU for this support, which helps us be better prepared for emergency situations,” stated the Head of the Executive.
The meeting also addressed the regional security context and the risks facing Romania, including incidents involving drones in the Black Sea area and in the vicinity of the Eastern Flank. In this context, Prime Minister Bolojan underlined the need to pay particular attention to the Black Sea region, calling for the support of the European Commission for the implementation of the Black Sea Resilience Platform, proposed by Romania as part of the European Union’s new strategic approach to the region. The initiative aims to strengthen regional cooperation and preparedness and response capacity in dealing with crisis situations and new types of risks.
European Commissioner Hadja Lahbib welcomed Romania’s initiative regarding the Black Sea Resilience Platform and emphasized the importance, in the current context, of a forward-looking approach to risks, mentioning that a risk assessment will be published in November. The European Commissioner also stressed the need to improve communication and coordination among Member States in crisis situations, as well as to strengthen the role of the European Commission’s Emergency Response Coordination Centre in ensuring a rapid and coordinated response.
“Romania is also an example regarding civil-military cooperation. Its experience can be a source of inspiration and a useful model for the development of these capabilities at European level,” stated European Commissioner Hadja Lahbib.
Another topic of discussions was equal opportunities, combating discrimination and measures to promote social inclusion. The discussions covered measures aimed at increasing women’s participation in the labour market, particularly women from rural areas. The situation of the Roma community was also addressed, with emphasis placed on the need for effective public policies to combat discrimination, reduce social disparities and ensure equal access to education, employment and public services.
Also attending the meeting, on behalf of the Government, were Secretary of State within the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Head of the Department for Emergency Situations (DSU), Dr Raed Arafat, and State Advisor at the Prime Minister’s Chancellery, Luminița Odobescu. Source gov.ro
