Is Vilnius ready to handle the traffic around the national stadium?

By Kotryna Labanauskaitė, LRT.lt.

With the national stadium nearing completion in Vilnius, members of the public are raising questions about whether this will mean more pressure on the already strained road network.

Three streets in Vilnius are currently most at risk of major congestion affecting public transport and cars, according to Kristina Čižiūnienė, an associate professor at Vilnius Gediminas Technical University (VILNIUS TECH).

They are Ozo, Ukmergės and Siesikų streets. Local roads in the Šeškinė district could also come under additional pressure.

“Šeškinė’s existing transport infrastructure is not capable of handling tens of thousands of stadium visitors, especially if a large proportion of them arrive by car,” Čižiūnienė says.

The expert also identified measures Vilnius city authorities could take to reduce the impact on the city’s transport system: “Reconstruction of the main road network around the stadium; efficient public transport operations, such as more frequent services before and after events and priority for bus lanes; temporary traffic management measures during events; a Park and Ride system; and improvements to pedestrian and cycling infrastructure.”
