Health ministry, IQVIA discuss expanding clinical trials, health technology investment

Health Minister Khaled Abdel Ghaffar and healthcare data and technology company IQVIA discussed expanding cooperation in clinical trials, pharmaceutical investment and health technology, alongside a proposal to establish a national centre to support the digital transformation of healthcare.

Abdel Ghaffar met with José Luis Fernández, Senior Vice President and General Manager at IQVIA, to discuss a broader partnership covering universal health insurance, public health initiatives, population health programmes and medical innovation, the ministry said.

The talks included the possibility of establishing licensed laboratories to support clinical research and trials and help attract investment to the sector.

Cooperation could also extend to rare diseases, pharmaceutical manufacturing and clinical development, as well as greater use of health data and technology to improve healthcare delivery.

The two sides separately discussed establishing a national digital health transformation command centre to support the use of healthcare data and technology and improve the efficiency of the health system.

Abdel Ghaffar said Egypt’s pharmaceutical manufacturing infrastructure, health databases and specialised research centres could provide a foundation for expanding research, innovation and investment in healthcare products and services.

The ministry and IQVIA also discussed cooperation with the Egyptian Health Council to develop clinical guidelines aimed at standardising medical practices.

The ministry did not provide a timetable for establishing the proposed digital centre or laboratories, nor disclose the potential value of the related investments.
