Palau is honoring three leaders whose service shaped the nation. Flags across Palau and at its overseas diplomatic missions are being flown at half-staff through Sept. 18 to remember former Minister of State Andres Uherbelau, former Speaker Ignacio Anastacio and Angaur traditional leader Ucherbelau Lorenzo Edward.

KOROR, Palau (Sept. 7, 2026) — Palau flags are being flown at half-staff across the country and at Palau’s embassies and consulates overseas to honor the lifelong service and legacy of three former and traditional leaders.
Under presidential proclamations, flags will be lowered in recognition of former Minister of State Andres Uherbelau, former Speaker of the House of Delegates Ignacio Anastacio and late Angaur high-ranking traditional leader Ucherbelau Lorenzo Edward.
The half-staff observance will run from Sept. 7 through Sept. 18, with mourning periods corresponding to the scheduled funerals of each leader:
- Former Minister of State Andres Uherbelau: Sept. 7-11. His funeral is scheduled for Sept. 9.
- Former Speaker Ignacio Anastacio: Sept. 7-16. His funeral is scheduled for Sept. 16.
- Angaur high-ranking traditional leader Ucherbelau Lorenzo Edward: Sept. 14-18. His funeral is scheduled for Sept. 18.
The Office of the President said the proclamations recognize the three leaders for their “lifelong service, leadership, and lasting legacy.”
The presidential memorandum also expressed Palau’s deep condolences to the families, friends and colleagues of Uherbelau, Anastacio and Edward.
The national flag observance follows Palau’s protocol for honoring leaders and prominent citizens following their deaths.
