The Government of Warrap State has declared a disaster and humanitarian emergency across all counties, as severe drought threatens food security and raises fears of acute food insecurity.
In a statement issued on September 4, the state government said Warrap is facing an unprecedented dry spell caused by severe rainfall deficits.
“State Government agencies including Warrap State Relief and Rehabilitation Commission (RRC), in coordination with the State Ministry of Agriculture, Environment, and Forestry have confirmed that the state faces an unprecedented dry spell caused by severe rainfall deficits, causing severe crop failures, also leading to catastrophic loss of livestock and grazing lands,” read in part the statement issued on Sept 4.
It said the drought has resulted in widespread crop failures, catastrophic livestock losses and the destruction of grazing lands.
The government says the situation could lead to a worsening food crisis unless urgent action is taken.
As part of its response, the state government has established an Early Warning and Risk Management Committee to coordinate drought mitigation efforts with government institutions and humanitarian partners.
The Warrap government is appealing to the national government, UN agencies, humanitarian partners and well-wishers to mobilize emergency assistance to prevent what it describes as a looming catastrophic famine.
“Moreover, the State government appeals to the National Government through the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management, UN Agencies, partners and well-wishers to mobilize emergency relief to avert the looming catastrophic famine,” the statement added.
It says state revenue will be prioritized for immediate water rehabilitation, borehole drilling and emergency livestock protection.
The government has also directed state security authorities and county administrations to facilitate unhindered access for humanitarian workers conducting assessments and delivering assistance.
