Iraq carries out four projects to recover 1.4 billion cubic feet of associated gas

Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) – The Iraqi Ministry of Oil is implementing four projects to recover associated gas with a capacity of 1.4 billion cubic feet.

The spokesperson for the Iraqi Oil Ministry, Salim al-Rikabi, stated that the ministry is currently focusing on implementing several important projects that will completely stop gas flaring by the end of 2029.

These projects aim to utilize gas resources, secure the country’s fuel and energy needs, and reduce the environmental damage caused by gas flaring, according to al-Rikabi.

The initiatives include the Artawi project with a capacity of 600 million cubic feet per day, the Bin Omar project with a capacity of 300 million cubic feet per day, the Nasiriyah project with a capacity of 200 million cubic feet per day, and the Halfaya project with a capacity of 300 million cubic feet per day, according to the state-run Iraqi News Agency (INA).

The Iraqi Oil Ministry is also working on the development of gas resources in the Akkas and Mansouriya fields. This effort is part of broader plans to enhance gas production and ensure a sufficient fuel supply for electricity generation and industrial sectors.

Iraq depends on Iranian gas to operate its power facilities, importing 50 million cubic feet from Iran.

Iranian gas accounts for over 40 percent of the country’s fuel consumption and roughly one-third of its electricity generation.

Despite its vast oil reserves, Iraq continues to experience energy challenges. During peak summer months, energy demand can exceed 50,000 to 55,000 megawatts, while current output ranges between 27,000 and 28,000 megawatts.
