NEW MEXICO – President Donald Trump signed an executive order that could remove endangered species protections for gray wolves and Mexican gray wolves.

The order gives the Interior secretary 90 days to decide whether gray wolf and Mexican wolf populations have recovered enough to come off the endangered species list.

The decision could allow farmers to kill wolves to protect their livestock.

The president said ranchers play a “vital role” in the food supply chain.

Figures show there were 319 Mexican wolves in the wild in the U.S. in 2025, up from just four when they were reintroduced in 1998.
