Hillsboro, ND (NewsDakota.com) – The Oakes Tornados and the Hillsboro-Central Valley (HCV) Burros met for the 25th time in history on Friday September 4th with Oakes having won the last 3 straight meetings. The Tornados would continue their winning streak as they shut-out the Burros for the 2nd time since being shut out by HCV in the 2022 quarterfinals, winning by a final score of 33-0.
The game started out with the Burros getting the opening possession but after getting an initial first down Oakes would force a punt. The Tornado offense, sans Beau Thorpe, would make a long methodical drive that would take up nearly 7 minutes of game time ending with an Andrew Rosendahl 4 yard touchdown run making it 6-0. HCV would then begin to march up the field with short runs from running back Bryce Miller and quarterback Ryan Billings as they would punch into Oakes territory to end the 1st quarter.
The Burros momentum would then come to a screeching halt as a direct snap to Miller would go off of his thigh and bounce on the ground resulting in Jyles Meier dropping on top of it to give Oakes the ball back. The Tornados wouldn’t be able to do anything on the ensuing drive and be forced to punt the ball away. HCV would find themselves in a 3rd and long situation on their drive and be forced to look to the air however Billings would quickly find himself under pressure and attempt to get rid of the ball with a man bearing down on him. He would throw the ball right before being hit into the arms of linebacker Matthias Dahlstrom who would take the ball back 36 yards to the end zone to make it a 12-0 game with 6:59 left in the quarter. The Oakes defense would continue to hold strong shutting down the next drive and forcing a turnover on downs on the Tornados 48 yard line. Oakes quarterback David Bakke, on the first play of the drive would find a wide open Brody Moore down the middle of the field at the HCV 25 yard line. Moore would have nobody touch him as he went into the end zone for a 52 yard touchdown pass making it 18-0 with 3:50 left in the half. The bad luck would still continue for the Burros as Miller would fumble again on the next drive resulting in David Bakke recovering the ball in prime field position. Oakes would go into the red zone and Rosendahl would again find pay dirt on a 13 yard run to make it 26-0 with 1:33 left. That score would hold going into the locker rooms.
Neither team was able to do much in the 3rd quarter as the game slowed down a lot. There would be one more turnover however as Miller would again fumble the ball resulting in Eli Dinger recovering it for the Tornados; giving Oakes 4 takeaways on the night.
Oakes would score one more time on the night in the 4th quarter when Rosendahl would go on a 42 yard sprint into the endzone with 7:25 left and Wyatt Arrowood would hit the extra point to make it 33-0. The Oakes defense including the JV defense who came into the game late would hold the Burros out of the endzone to give themselves the shut-out victory.
