At least seven neighborhoods in low-lying areas of Yangon Region’s Hlegu Township, including Aungmingalar, Myoma, Yeiktha, Neikban U, Santhawdar, Thidar Aye and Yankin wards were flooded on Wednesday after heavy rainfall caused the water level of Nga Moe Yeik Creek to rise. Hlegu is located 26 miles (42 km) north of Yangon.
“The condition will worsen if the rain continues in the upcoming days,” a Hlegu resident told DVB on the condition of anonymity.
A flash flood warning is in place for North Okkalapa, South Okkalapa, North Dagon, South Dagon, Thingangyun, Thaketa, Dawbon, Pazundaung, and Mingalar Taung Nyunt townships.
Regime authorities urged residents in areas along the creek to prepare for possible evacuation after water at the Nga Moe Yeik Reservoir overflowed by around 2.5 feet (0.8 m) on Sept. 3.
Another Hlegu resident told DVB that flooding could worsen in low-lying areas of the town as water at Mahura Dam is overflowing by around 1.5 feet (0.4 m) from the spillway, while Paunglin Dam is also nearing full capacity.
The regime’s Department of Meteorology and Hydrology has announced that scattered to widespread thunderstorms are likely to occur in Bago and Yangon between Sept. 6-9.
