Cabinet has approved the Samoa Rugby Football Union (S.R.F.U.) as the official body responsible for governing and leading rugby in Samoa.

In a press release yesterday evening, the Government stated that the Ministry of Sports and Recreation is spearheading the restructuring and future development of rugby in Samoa.

This comes after the two unions, Lakapi Samoa and S.R.F.U., hosted separate 7s tournaments on the same weekend.

Lakapi Samoa hosted the first leg of the Vodafone 7s, which was won by Tepatasi, while S.R.F.U. hosted the Moata’a Measina 7s in Apia, with Itu o Tane taking home the cup.

The divide has now left the country in a predicament over which banner Manu Samoa will play under as the Rugby World Cup looms in 2028.

It is unclear which individuals will head the endorsed Samoa Rugby Football Union or the list of its Board Members.

The stance from World Rugby has been to conduct an independent external review while an agreed Interim Board is appointed to govern in the meantime.
