A driver has been killed at his home in Katozi village after armed assailants attacked him and stole a Toyota Land Cruiser he was scheduled to deliver to a client in Lusaka.
Muchinga Province Police Commissioner Lubinda Mayamba confirmed the incident Friday, saying police have opened investigations into a case of murder and aggravated robbery.
The deceased was identified as Chatowa Silungwe.
According to police, Chatowa arrived home around 22:00 hours on Friday after clearing the vehicle at Nakonde Customs Yard. The white Land Cruiser, belonging to a Lusaka businessman, was expected to depart for Lusaka at around 03:00 hours on Saturday.
Police said Chatowa was in the yard when two unknown men entered his home. One suspect, armed with a knife, allegedly demanded vehicle keys from Chatowa’s girlfriend while the other waited outside.
The girlfriend said she was forced to lead the men to the bedroom where the keys were taken, along with a mobile phone. The suspects then ordered her to kneel and not make noise before leaving the house.
She later screamed for help, prompting Chatowa to come out of the bathroom and confront the suspects.
A neighbour told police he saw one suspect reversing the vehicle while the other stood nearby with a knife. The neighbour said Chatowa chased the vehicle and was attacked in the process before the suspects sped off.
Chatowa sustained a cut to the back of his head and bruises to his legs and hands. He was rushed to Nakonde Urban Clinic by his girlfriend and the neighbour but was pronounced dead on arrival.
Police said the stolen vehicle had not been recovered by Saturday morning. No arrests have been made and investigations are ongoing.
