An Air China Boeing 747-8 has been damaged and grounded at the John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York following an incident.

The reported grounding follows what is being described as a refueling incident.

According to the DJS Aviation, the plane’s wing refueling connections were damaged while preparing for a scheduled service to Beijing that was later cancelled.

B-2486, the 747-8 in New York, was scheduled to operate service as Air China flight CA982 from New York through to Beijing (PEK) on Monday 31 August 2026.

However, this did not happen, and while no injuries were reported, the type was taken out of service.

What Happened to the Air China Boeing 747-8?

Reports online and in various publications indicate that the Boeing 747-8 was involved in the incident in the early hours of the morning while parked at its gate at JFK in New York.

Shanghai Observer said the fuel truck began moving away from the jet; however, two refueling hoses remained connected to the 747-8.

As the truck moved away, the hoses were pulled from the fuel pumping ports mounted to the wing, damaging not only the hoses but also the connections aboard the aircraft.

Images published online show airport personnel examining the refueling area and ground equipment after the reported fuel spillage on the apron. Air China has yet to comment publicly on what happened in New York.

B-2486 Key for Long-Haul Air China Flying

B-2486 is one of Air China’s Boeing 747-8s, the final passenger variant of the 747 family, and the Chinese operator is among the few airlines to have ordered the type.

The aircraft, with its high capacity, has served high-demand, long-haul routes, including services to New York JFK and other North American cities where smaller widebodies may not provide sufficient capacity.

Air China first received B-2486 in November 2014, ferried from Paine Field (PAE) to Beijing on 6 November 2014. At the time of the incident, the quad-engined widebody was 11.9 years old and one of the seven Boeing 747-8s remaining in Air China’s fleet.

Following the incident, the aircraft has been taken out of service, and its future availability will depend on subsequent technical inspections and the extent of the reported damage.

The investigation must determine what, if any, repairs are needed to return the aircraft to service.
