Juneau Community Garden Harvest Fair set for this weekend

A celebration of the growing season and the community that makes it flourish returns to Juneau this weekend.
The 32nd annual Harvest Fair is set to take place at the Juneau Community Garden on Saturday (Sept. 5) from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. The festival offers a chance to showcase gardening success in Juneau’s challenging climate by bringing together gardeners and neighbors for a farmers market filled with self-guided tours, kids activities, a bake sale and hot drinks, lunch, live music, and a juried flower and produce show.
“Visitors can see what can be grown in Southeast Alaska’s cool, northern climate, meet local gardeners, and sign up for available 2027 garden plots,” Travel Juneau stated. “It’s a relaxed, distinctly Juneau event and a celebration of the last abundance of summer.”
Gates open at 9 a.m. for donations at the market and exhibit entry dropoff before 10:15 a.m. The bake sale and drinks will be available in the morning as well, followed by exhibit judging. The fair is still accepting entries for the flower and produce show which is free for anyone to enter.
Exhibit entry divisions include Vegetables: garden vegetables, potatoes, and greenhouse vegetables; Largest & Unusual: largest, unusual, and produce sculpture; Herbs; Fruits; Harvest Baskets; Flowers: annuals, perennials, tubers/bulbs, and arrangements; Prepared Foods: pickles and relishes, and jams and jellies; and Garden Pots.
Ribbons for adults and youth will be awarded for grand champion, division champion, class champion, first place, second place, and third place. All youth will receive separate participant ribbons.
Juneau Community Garden has brochures with a detailed instruction guide on how to exhibit produce and flowers.
“Select specimens similar to or slightly larger than the size most commonly sold in markets,” the garden stated. “Select specimens that are uniform in size, shape, maturity, and color.”
The garden added to choose for quality, free from damage, blemishes, and disease, and to remove dirt by washing or crushing carefully.
The Juneau Community Garden is a non-profit organization that encourages local gardening by providing a place for gardeners, both experienced and beginners, who don’t have a yard or who need additional space. The garden was organized in 1993 and is located on Montana Creek Road, which the City and Borough of Juneau leased for gardening, education, and charitable uses.
Regular plots are 10 feet by 20 feet and rent for $35 per year, while climbing beds are two feet by eight feet and cost $5 per year.
“Come celebrate the season with fun, flavor, and festivities for everyone,” Juneau Community Garden stated.
