Two national civil society organizations have issued an urgent appeal for government intervention to de-escalate growing political and intercommunal tensions between Twic County in Warrap State and the neighboring Abyei Administrative Area.
The African Centre for Conflict Resolution and Peacebuilding (ACCRPB) and the Community Empowerment for Progress Organization (CEPO) expressed deep concern over a surge in inflammatory statements, hostile propaganda, and direct threats stemming from the longstanding boundary dispute between the Ngok Dinka and Twic communities.
Speaking on the escalating situation, CEPO Executive Director Edmond Yakani warned that hostile rhetoric from political elites is laying the groundwork for renewed violence.
“We have seen emerging messages from political elites loaded with hate speech, hatred, hostile propaganda, and calls for violence to resolve misunderstandings,” Yakani stated.
“I would like to appeal to the elites of both communities to de-escalate these communications. I also appeal to the President—the early warning signs are present, and past unaddressed warnings resulted in the tragic loss of innocent lives from both communities.”
Yakani further urged youth from both regions to reject calls for conflict and resist being utilized to advance elite political agendas.
In a parallel statement, ACCRPB Board Chairman Dr. Dhieu Mathok Diing Wol raised alarm over hostile exchanges between Members of Parliament representing Twic County and Abyei.
ACCRPB specifically highlighted reports of an ultimatum demanding that Ngok inhabitants living south of the Kiir River vacate the area within seven days.
The peacebuilding body warned that such displacement threats risk triggering a grave security and humanitarian emergency.
ACCRPB called on the National Government, the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS), and regional partners to intervene immediately, urging all parties to utilize established conflict resolution mechanisms rather than confrontation.
