GREENSBURG, Ind. (WISH) — Two people are dead after a house fire in rural Decatur County.

Decatur County Sheriff Bill Meyerrose said a call came in at 12:30 a.m. Sunday regarding a house fire in the 5700 block of South County Road 1000 West.

“That’s not a very well-traveled road,” he said. “So, the fire had a decent start before anyone saw the house was on fire.”

Meyerrose said the house was completely consumed by the fire and was a total loss. First responders found a man and a woman “in close proximity to the house,” he said.

The man and the woman died in the fire. The Decatur County Coroner’s office is working on identifying them and notifying next of kin.

The Indiana fire marshal is investigating the cause of the fire. Meyerrose could not give a timeline for the investigation.
