Haldwani: Uttarakhand is set to take a major step towards strengthening its sports ecosystem with the establishment of its first sports university. The foundation stone for the first phase of the proposed university will be laid at the International Stadium in Golapar, Haldwani, on August 29, National Sports Day, Sports Minister Rekha Arya said.
The occasion will also see athletes being honoured with awards and scholarships, according to the Sports Minister.
Describing the development as a historic moment for the youth of Uttarakhand, popularly known as Devbhoomi (Land of Gods), Arya said the establishment of a world-class sports university had been a long-standing dream that was now moving towards reality.
The proposed university is expected to provide talented athletes from the state with access to high-level coaching and modern sports infrastructure. The initiative also aims to strengthen sports-related education and training within Uttarakhand.
According to the Sports Minister, facilities focused on sports science will also be developed in the state, providing athletes with access to specialised support alongside conventional training.
Arya recently held a meeting with officials at the Secretariat to review preparations related to the initiative. During the meeting, she took stock of the arrangements and directed officials to ensure that all necessary preparations are completed within the stipulated timeframe.
The proposed sports university is being viewed as an important initiative to create better opportunities for Uttarakhand’s young athletes and strengthen the state’s sporting infrastructure.
