The government of Warrap State says 49 people have been killed and 33 others wounded in a cattle raid by armed criminals in Tonj North County.

According to a statement issued by State Minister of Information and Communication William Wol Mayom, the attack occurred at about 5:00 am on Thursday and targeted a cattle camp in Juer Boma.

Minister Mayom blamed armed criminals from neighbouring Unity State for the attack, although authorities in Unity have not responded to the accusation.

He condemned the violence and called for restraint as the two state governments work together to identify those responsible, bring them to justice and prevent similar incidents.

“We extend heartfelt condolences to the families that lost loved ones in the attack, and appeal for restraint as the two state governments establish cooperation to bring culprits to book, and deter future incidents,” the minister said in the statement.

Minister Mayom also expressed condolences to the families and communities affected by the attack.

The Warrap State government has appealed to humanitarian organizations and well-wishers to support efforts to respond to the humanitarian crisis caused by conflict-related displacement.
