You might be surprised to see my face in the paper on a Wednesday rather than the traditional Thursday. We’ve decided to shift Arts Ahead one day, well, ahead. We know some of you are receiving your papers later in the day now with our shift to home delivery, and we want everyone to be able to take advantage of any Thursday night events mentioned here.

We were informed of this difference thanks to a dedicated reader who wanted to make sure they could attend the events I mention here each week. This email exchange made me realize that it’s been just over one year since we launched this column. When we started, I had no idea what it would become. In any case, I hope it’s provided some helpful ideas or even just something to chuckle over as you read the paper at the breakfast table.

I can tell you that I still haven’t gotten over my face appearing on the cover each week. It’s funny, too, when people recognize me in downtown Concord on the sidewalk somewhere. My mom certainly gets a kick out of it, too.

So all that to say: Thank you for reading not only Arts Ahead but the Monitor as a whole.

And with that, here’s this week’s selection of events:

If you, like me, are in search of more creative outlets, then Gnomie’s Woodland Fountain may be the perfect place to spend your Thursday evening. “This isn’t your typical paint night — Susan [Riedl] will guide you through unique techniques and painting styles, making it easy (and fun!) to create something truly special together. After all… trying new techniques can be a good thing,” the event promises. Tickets cost $45 and can be bought on the Gnomie’s website.

Join the Concord Community Music School for a Family Music Festival on Saturday from 12-4 p.m. There will be an instrument “petting zoo,” demo classes, group jam sessions, performances, food trucks, face painting and more. It’s a great chance to have fun with the whole family or even check out the music school with some friends.

The Bee House is reopening at Canterbury Shaker Village, so head over to Canterbury to see the new exhibit, hear some educational talks, tour the Village and experience agricultural demonstrations on Saturday from 12-4 p.m. Different vendors will be on site for a market, and there will be various food and beverage options, including a beer garden for those of you who are 21 years of age and older. Attendance is free, so definitely be sure to stop by.

Lots happening on Saturday! Here’s one more option: the City of Concord’s monthly group hike is taking place at Oak Hill Trails at 9:30 a.m. Participation is free! All you have to do is show up with your hiking boots and a can-do spirit. The three-mile, two-hour hike will be guided, so you don’t have to worry about a thing.

The Gem and Mineral Show is back in Concord this weekend on both Saturday and Sunday. You can check it out at the Everett Arena from 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. on Saturday and 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. on Sunday. (I’ve heard it rocks!)
