Twenty-five police officers from across the National Police Service are undergoing a five-day Child Protection Focal Points training in Juba as part of efforts to strengthen the security sector’s response to violations against children.
The training is being facilitated by the Dallaire Institute for Children, Peace and Security in collaboration with trainers from the National Police Service.
The participants are drawn from different divisions and departments of the NPS and are being trained on preventing the recruitment and use of children in armed conflict and strengthening the capacity of security sector actors to protect children.
The training covers the six grave violations against children, as well as the Vancouver Principles on peacekeeping and the prevention of the recruitment and use of child soldiers.
Speaking during the opening of the training, Dallaire Institute Country Director Amb. John Kon Kelei congratulated the participating officers and urged them to fully engage in the programme.
He stressed the importance of strengthening police preparedness to respond to child protection concerns, particularly during the upcoming elections and the post-election period.
Amb. Kon Kelei also reaffirmed the Dallaire Institute’s commitment to supporting security sector institutions, particularly the National Police Service, to strengthen their child protection capacities.
Representing the NPS, Maj. Gen. James Dak Karlo, Director of the Special Protection Unit, commended the Dallaire Institute for its continued support and capacity-building initiatives for police officers.
He urged the participants to remain focused throughout the training and apply the knowledge and skills gained to their work in the field.
The Dallaire Institute for Children, Peace and Security works to prevent the recruitment and use of children in armed violence and strengthen systems that protect children affected by conflict through training, research, advocacy and partnerships with security and defence institutions.
