Bystanders and a state police trooper pulled a driver from his burning vehicle after he drove off Interstate 93 South in Concord Friday afternoon, per Concord Fire.

Concord Fire responded to the southbound lanes between exits 15 and 16 at 1:30 p.m. following reports that a car had gone off the road, hit a tree and caught fire, according to Concord Fire Chief John Chisholm.

 State Police Lt. Alex Davis was driving south on Interstate 93 when he noticed the car on fire. He quickly stopped his cruiser and pulled the driver from the burning vehicle with the help of a bystander, according to a Department of Safety spokesperson.

When firefighters arrived on-scene, Chisholm said, the driver was out of the vehicle.

The driver, an adult male, sustained life-threatening injuries and was transported to Concord Hospital, Chisholm said. Lt. Davis was taken to the hospital as well, as a precaution to be evaluated for smoke inhalation. No bystanders were injured.

The flames consumed the car as Concord Fire extinguished it. Crews stayed on scene until the vehicle was removed, Chisholm said.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation, according to State Police.

“The Lieutenant would like to thank the bystander who assisted him at the scene,” State Police said in a statement to the Monitor.
