Acting Govenror Pulumataala Ae Ae Jr has suggested a way to raise funds for sports program for the Department of Education.
In his remarks at the Second Education Summit to discuss the strategic five year plan for DOE, Pulumataala urged that funding be sought to fund sport events for our children.
He highlighted the success of many sons and daughters of the territory who earned a living and developed their families through sports. In addition sports has provided educational opportunities for our youth in off island colleges and universities.
At a recent hearing of the House Education and Scholarship Committee it was revealed that there’s no funding allocated for sports in the proposed Fiscal Year 2027 budget for the Department of Education. Director Maefau Dr. Mary Taufetee said ODW is talking with businesses and non government organizations for assistance.
The Acting Governor said the administration should ensure that funding is made available to fund sports. “We should not sit idle on this,” he said. Pulumataala suggested that $2 be deducted from the paycheck of every government employee monthly to go towards DOE sports programs.
For the school year ahead the Acting Governor underscored the vital and important role that teachers play and said the future of our children depends on you. He quoted from the late Governor AP Lutali, that “Actions speak louder than words,” and said the success of students is measured by their work.
