THE family of National Reconciliation Party for Unity and Prosperity (NRPUP) presidential spokesperson George Chisanga has filed a High Court application seeking his release, saying he has been detained at Chelstone Police Station since Aug. 14 without charge.

In court papers filed Aug. 17, Chisanga’s brother, Emmanuel Chisanga, said the family lost contact with George on Aug. 14 while he was driving. The vehicle was later located at the home of NRPUP presidential candidate Brian Mundubile, a former Mporokoso MP.

The family said it only established at about 10 p.m. on Aug. 15 that George was being held at Chelstone. Emmanuel said police had not notified the family of the arrest, given reasons for the detention, or produced him in court.

The application names the Attorney General, Inspector General of Police, the officer-in-charge of Chelstone Police Station and “any person holding George” as respondents.

Emmanuel said his brother could not depose to an affidavit because he remains in custody. He argued that continued detention without court appearance constitutes an ongoing violation of George’s right to liberty.

The family has asked the court to hear the matter urgently during the Michaelmas vacation, which runs Aug. 8 to Sept. 6.

The filing comes amid heightened political activity following the recent presidential election. It does not state why Chisanga was allegedly detained.
