LSU commit RJ Luis has a preliminary injunction hearing set for Aug. 24 to earn eligibility for the 2026-27 season.

The former St. John’s star will sit in front of Judge Ronald R. Johnson at 1:30 p.m. in an East Baton Rouge court, according to a search on Clerk Connect.

Luis, who committed to play for coach Will Wade on May 19, needed to file a lawsuit against the NCAA to gain eligibility for the upcoming season. He wants to return to college basketball after going undrafted in the 2025 NBA Draft and signing an NBA contract. The NCAA wants players who’ve signed NBA contracts to be ineligible.

“The NCAA has not and will not grant eligibility to any prospective or returning student-athletes who have signed an NBA contract (including a two-way contract),” NCAA president Charlie Baker said in a statement in December 2025.

Luis, a 6-foot-7 wing, entered the draft after playing three years of college basketball. After going undrafted, he signed a two-way contract with the Utah Jazz. The 23-year-old was then traded to the Boston Celtics in exchange for Georges Niang and two future second-round picks.

He was then waived on Oct. 15, 2025, before the NBA season and signed an Exhibit 10 contract with the Celtics’ NBA G-League affiliate, the Maine Celtics. An Exhibit 10 contract is a one-year, minimum salary agreement that isn’t guaranteed.

Luis didn’t appear in any G-League games as the Maine Celtics waived him due to an injury. He also never played in the NBA Summer League due to a knee issue. Luis did appear in three NBA preseason games for the Boston Celtics, playing seven minutes and scoring six points overall.

Luis averaged 18.2 points and 7.2 rebounds per game at St. John’s during the 2024-25 season, winning Big East Player of the Year and being named a second-team AP All-American. He left college after his junior year while his name was in the transfer portal.

He spent his freshman year at Massachusetts in the Atlantic 10 before playing for coach Rick Pitino at St. John’s for two years.
