EVERETT — Carter Dorighi kept it simple.

Cesar Quintas stood 90 feet from home plate, and with the Everett AquaSox tied 2-2 against the Spokane Indians with one out in the bottom of the ninth at Everett Memorial Stadium on Friday, Dorighi understood all he needed was one solid swing to win the game.

Spokane reliever Seth Clausen pumped the first pitch down the middle, testing Dorighi early. He took it for strike one. The second pitch went way outside to even the count, and Dorighi fouled off the next pitch back to drop it to 1-2.

That was all he needed.

With the next pitch in a similar spot, Dorighi singled down the third base line to bring in Quintas and lift Everett (58-54 overall, 25-21 second-half) to a 3-2 win against the Indians (50-61, 21-24). Quintas, who joined the AquaSox on Aug. 6 from Single-A Inland Empire, led the inning off with a double to get into scoring position, and outfielder Anthony Donofrio moved him to third with a groundout to set up the winning play.

“The guys ahead of me did a great job,” Dorighi said. “Quintas, obviously, starting it off getting on base, and then Anthony moving him over, so kind of made my job a little bit easier. Just trying to put the bat on the ball and get a win for the fellas.”

The AquaSox have won four straight against Spokane, and now sit tied with Vancouver in the Northwest League second-half standings, just half a game behind first-half champion Eugene. Should Eugene win the second half as well, the second-place team would face them in the Northwest League Championship Series next month. Every win keeps Everett in prime position to earn the opportunity to repeat its title from last year, but the team isn’t looking that far ahead.

“We’re not talking about streaks. We’re not talking about winning this game and winning that game. We’re going to win the game we have in front of us today,” AquaSox manager Ryan Scott said. “So the guys came out there, did that, and now we move on to tomorrow. The biggest thing that we’ve messaged with the guys — and the staff’s done a phenomenal job of that — is if we focus on one day at a time, we’ll be where we want to be at the end of the season.

“The more we start looking and trying to scoreboard watch and see where we’re at in the standings, the more we’re going to start putting pressure on ourselves and try to get outside of who we are and not play our game, our brand of baseball.”

Everett starter Colton Shaw went 5 1/3 innings, allowing six hits, one run and one walk to go with five strikeouts. The 23-year-old righty redeemed himself from his previous outing against Spokane on July 18, when he allowed four earned runs in just 2/3 of an inning. Shaw started out hot on Friday, retiring the first five batters he faced. Indians infielder Kelvin Hidalgo singled with two strikes and two outs in the top of the second, but catcher Matthew Ellis caught him stealing moments later to end the frame.

“I kind of had some mixed feelings about it,” Shaw said. “Sometimes you want to come back, fighting harder after what they did last time, but I was just trying to treat it like another start. I mean, I faced these guys three or four times now, and that one time they got me, but I was due for one so I got them back.”

After Spokane starter Aiden May breezed through the top of the AquaSox order, the bottom half put a couple of runs up in the second inning. Infielders Austin St. Laurent and Luis Suisbel hit back-to-back singles, and a fly out from Quintas allowed St. Laurent to tag up to third. With a single from Donofrio and a double from Dorighi in the eight- and nine-holes, respectively, Everett took a 2-0 lead.

“It’s fun to hit when the guys in front of you are hitting, just kind of passing the baton to the next guy,” Dorighi said. “And Anthony is swinging a hot stick lately, so it’s fun to hit behind him.”

The Indians immediately cut it to 2-1 in the third with three straight hits off Shaw with two outs. Outfielder Cameron Nelson’s double to right field brought in outfielder Clayton Gray. Both starters settled into a groove from there, trading quick half-innings until Gray put Spokane in prime position to tie with a triple in the fifth inning.

With one out and the top of the Indians order due up, Shaw got right to work. He got ahead of Nelson with two called strikes, but Nelson held off on a low third pitch before fouling off the next two. Shaw could not get Nelson to bite on a couple of sweepers he sent down and in, which brought it to a full count.

Going into the eighth pitch of the at-bat, Shaw and Ellis settled on a changeup, which Nelson had fouled off earlier. This time, Shaw got the swing and miss he wanted for the second out. Designated hitter Roldy Brito grounded out to first on the next pitch, and Shaw walked back to the dugout with a 2-1 lead still intact.

“I wanted changeup again,” Shaw said. “(Ellis) saw it, so I ripped it, and it ended up being a good one. He swung over it.”

The Yale product returned for the sixth, striking out infielder Roynier Hernandez on a full count before former college teammate Reid Easterly took over. Easterly struck out infielder Wilder Dalis, but allowed Spokane to load the bases with two outs on back-to-back singles from infielder Tanner Thach and Hidalgo and a four-pitch walk to outfielder Derek Bernard.

Easterly got catcher Alan Espinal down to his final strike, but he threw a wild pitch that allowed Thach to score from third and tie it 2-2. The 24-year-old lefty ultimately struck Espinal out on a full count to end the inning, but it was a new ball game.

Suisbel hit into an inning-ending double play in the bottom of the sixth, and Easterly kept it tied in the top of the seventh by getting Dalis to fly out to right field with runners on the corners. The AquaSox came up short again in the seventh after putting two runners on, but reliever Caleb Franzen held Spokane in check with two innings of one-hit ball, including three strikeouts in the eighth.

Then, just as they did in the beginning of the game, the bottom of the lineup produced a run when they needed to. Quintas fouled off two pitches before sending one down to the right field corner, and Donofrio’s groundout teed up Dorighi for the winner.

“That’s just textbook baseball,” Scott said. “It’s the old ‘get ‘em on, get ‘em over, get ‘em in,’ so it’s always cool when it works out like that, and a lot of credit to (Quintas) for battling into that two-strike count and then finding a pitch to hit over the plate, not trying to do too much with it, getting it down the right field line. Not trying to get too aggressive there and holding himself at second base and understanding at second base, we’re in a good spot right there and nobody out. … The guys competed their butts off tonight, so it was really fun to watch.”

The AquaSox will aim to make it five straight wins on Saturday at 7:05 p.m. PT.
