Airfare fuel surcharge to ease in late August

Civil Aeronautics Board

MANILA, Philippines — Travelers flying in and out of the Philippines will get a slight relief in the second half of August as additional airfare charges due to jet fuel costs will decline with an easing in global fuel prices.al fuel prices.

In an advisory on Wednesday, the Civil Aeronautics Board (CAB) said the jet fuel surcharge will drop to Level 12 from Level 13 from Aug. 16 to 31, as global jet fuel prices again ease after surging in late July amid renewed conflict in the Middle East.

Under Level 12, airlines may collect an additional P389 to P1,137 for domestic trips, down from the P423 to P1,237 in allowable surcharges under Level 13.

The same reduction will apply to international flights, with allowable fuel surcharges falling to between P1,284.40 and P9,550.13 from P1,396.74 to P10,385.42 in the previous cycle.

CAB said airlines will add these charges on top of base fares and apply a conversion rate of P61.30 per US dollar.

The reduction comes as global jet fuel prices eased in early August, although they remain elevated compared with levels before the Middle East conflict.

According to the International Air Transport Association, jet fuel averaged $146.93 per barrel in the week ending Aug. 7, down 7.5 percent from $158.77 a week earlier.

Under CAB Resolution No. 25, Series of 2022, airlines impose fuel surcharges on top of base fares and may remove them only if the one-month average jet fuel price falls below P21 per liter.

However, the CAB is still using a shortened 15-day review cycle for jet fuel surcharges, which it began in March amid the Middle East war crisis to reduce the lag between actual fuel costs and applicable fuel surcharge. /pai
