Following heavy rainfall on Monday evening in the Niti Valley of Chamoli district, the Tamak Nala (drain) suddenly surged. Due to the strong current, the ‘Bailey bridge’ constructed over the Tamak Nala on the Jyotirmath-Malari motor road was washed away, disrupting vehicular movement in the Niti Valley. According to the District Emergency Operation Centre, the bridge—built by the 123 BRTF (Border Roads Task Force) at Suraithota—was damaged and swept away by the excessive flow of water.

Upon receiving the information, the district administration, in coordination with local authorities, dispatched SDRF and NDRF teams to the site. As a safety precaution, vehicular movement from the direction of Malari has been halted. Administrative teams are en route to assess the situation and prepare for relief and rescue operations. Anticipating a potential rise in the water level of the Alaknanda River due to the surge in the Tamak Nala, the administration has instructed residents living along the riverbanks in low-lying areas to remain alert.

Police authorities are making public announcements to raise awareness, urging people to exercise caution and stay away from rivers and streams. The administration has appealed to the public to avoid unnecessary travel during inclement weather and to adhere to official guidelines. Furthermore, people are advised to exercise extra caution given the rising water levels in rivers and streams.
