Two days after the Supreme Court granted the go-ahead to arrest Trinamool Congress MP Abhishek Banerjee’s personal assistant Sumit Roy, he appeared before the West Bengal Police on Saturday (August 8, 2026) for interrogation.

Mr. Roy had been in hiding after the defeat of Trinamool Congress in the West Bengal Assembly polls. Several cases of fraud, including a land grab case at Salboni, were registered against him. He appeared at Bhabani Bhawan, the West Bengal Police headquarters, at 10 a.m. in the morning and was questioned till late in the evening.

The questioning of Mr. Roy assumes significance as he was closely linked to Trinamool Congress leader Abhishek Banerjee as his personal assistant. There have been 16 FIRs filed against the Trinamool Congress general secretary after the change of regime in West Bengal.

A few weeks ago, a team of police in Salboni had tried to break into a south Kolkata residence of Mr. Banerjee looking for his personal assistant. Other than the Salboni land grab case, there are at least two more cases against Mr. Roy. Earlier this week, Mr. Roy approached the Calcutta High Court seeking urgent hearing of the cases. Justice Saugata Bhattacharyya dismissed the petition for urgent listing and said that the hearing will be held as per the list.

‘Probe will reach Abhishek’

Leader of Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly Ritabrata Banerjee said Mr. Roy is a crucial link to Camac Street (often referred to as the office of Abhishek Banerjee) and soon the investigators will reach Abhishek Banerjee too.

Meanwhile, former Trinamool Congress MLA Sanat Dey was on Saturday arrested in State’s North 24 Parganas district over allegations of extortion and post-poll violence, police said.

Mr. Dey, former MLA of Naihati, was arrested as he is accused of extortion, land grabbing and attacks on BJP workers following the 2021 Assembly elections.

Local residents of Naihati earlier claimed that the former MLA had unleashed a reign of terror across the Naihati region and issued threats prior to election results. Several former MLAs of the Trinamool Congress and councillors were arrested on charges of extortion and electoral violence after the BJP came to power in West Bengal.
