This summer, children across Malta and Gozo are learning about the European Union by taking penalties. For the 14th consecutive year, Europe Direct Valletta and Servizzi Ewropej f’Malta are running interactive EU sessions as part of the Government’s SkolaSajf programme. Over July and August, a total of 23 sessions will be held; reaching around 300 children aged 8 to 12 across both islands.

What do the sessions involve?

Each one starts with an interactive presentation covering the basics, the EU’s 27 member states, what Malta’s membership means, the Union’s three main institutions, and who’s involved in the EU’s decision-making process. The children also pick up fun facts about different Member States and learn how countries team up to get things done together.

Then it gets competitive

This year’s twist? A football theme inspired by the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The idea is simple: just like a football team, the EU is stronger when its members work together. The children take part in an EU-themed penalty shootout, answering questions about the EU and its Member States before stepping up to score a goal for their team.

It’s part of a bigger push

The sessions are being run in partnership with the Foundation for Educational Services (FES), Europe Direct Gozo and the European Commission Representation in Malta.

They’re also just one piece of the puzzle. Throughout the year, Europe Direct Valletta and Servizzi Ewropej f’Malta produce EU-themed publications for children and youths and organises visits to EU-funded sites around Malta and Gozo, helping them understand better how the European Union impacts their everyday lives.
