6 Optimist boats hand-built by Carriacou youth

A centuries-old maritime legacy has found fresh life in the hands of the next generation following a summer boatbuilding class in the traditional community of Windward.

The initiative, organised under the Division of Youth’s Camp Flame programme, brought young enthusiasts together to learn the meticulous art of traditional boatbuilding. Under the expert guidance of master shipwright Bernard McLawrence, the participants successfully constructed 6 Optimist boats from scratch. To complete their creations, the young men personalised each vessel with their own vibrant paint designs.

The intensive summer course was hosted at the official boatbuilding school site. The facility represents a strategic partnership between the Ministry of Carriacou and Petite Martinique Affairs and Local Government, and Ambassador Piero Zippoli – Grenada’s Special Envoy for Investment, designed specifically to preserve the island’s unique cultural heritage.

The organisers are now planning a special launching ceremony for the 6 newly minted vessels. True to Carriacou’s deeply rooted maritime heritage, the event will feature all the time-honoured customs, blessings, and traditions historically associated with launching a new vessel in Windward.
