Camp Aldersgate recently announced a $150,000 pledge from the C. Louis & Mary C. Cabe Foundation of Gurdon. According to the camp, the commitment is the largest single gift the foundation has ever made to Camp Aldersgate and will fund the repair, refurbishment and restoration of its historic 1947 Allan Herschell carousel.
For generations, the carousel has been a favorite destination for campers, providing smiles and lasting memories for children and adults of all abilities. After decades of use and exposure to the elements, however, the iconic attraction now requires extensive restoration to preserve it for future campers.
Built by the Allan Herschell Company in 1947, the carousel has become a symbol of fun, inclusion and community at Camp Aldersgate. The restoration project aims to preserve its historic charm while ensuring it remains safe and operational for years to come.
Planned improvements include structural repairs, refurbishment of carousel components, restoration of its classic features and enhancements designed to better protect the ride from future wear and tear.
Camp officials say the transformational gift marks a major milestone in the effort to preserve one of the organization’s most recognizable attractions. While the $150,000 pledge provides significant momentum toward the project, additional community support will be needed to fully fund the restoration.
As work gets underway, Camp Aldersgate is inviting the community to celebrate the beginning of the restoration effort. The camp also encourages visitors to learn more about the project and the role the restored carousel will play in creating memorable camp experiences for future generations.
Located in central Arkansas, Camp Aldersgate provides year-round recreational and therapeutic programs for children and adults with disabilities, medical conditions and special needs. Leaders say restoring the historic carousel will help ensure that future campers can continue making memories around one of the camp’s most beloved traditions for decades to come.
