…says publication of candidates’ names has ended misinformation, propaganda
The National Working Committee (NWC) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) said on Sunday that it welcomed the publication of its candidates’ names for the 2027 elections by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), noting that the development confirmed the party’s readiness to actively contest the polls.
The party also said the electoral umpire’s action had laid to rest the doubts, misinformation and propaganda suggesting that the PDP would neither field candidates nor be recognised by INEC.
“Of particular significance is the publication of the names of our presidential candidate, Distinguished Senator Professor Sandy Ojang Onor, and his running mate, Alhaji Babangida Umar, who will proudly fly the flag of our great party in the 2027 presidential election.
“This development has effectively laid to rest the sustained misinformation and propaganda by those who desperately sought to convince Nigerians that the PDP would not field a presidential candidate. For months, these unfounded claims were deployed as a campaign tool to mislead Nigerians, discourage our supporters and create doubts about the future of our party.
“Today, the facts have prevailed, the law has taken its course, and the PDP has once again been vindicated,” the party said in a statement issued on Sunday by its National Publicity Secretary, Honourable Jungudo Haruna Mohammed.
While commending INEC, the judiciary and security agencies for upholding their constitutional responsibilities, the party also praised its supporters for remaining faithful amid the challenges it had faced in recent months.
The party said it was committed to reconciliation and internal cohesion and had extended “an open hand” to aggrieved members, noting that presenting a united front would enable the PDP to achieve maximum success in the elections.
The NWC said it had thrown its doors open to returning members and new members willing to be part of the changes taking place within the PDP.
The party said that, under the leadership of the National Chairman, Honourable Abdulrahman Mohammed, and the National Secretary, Senator Samuel Anyanwu, the PDP remained undeterred in its resolve to rebuild its structures and present quality leadership to Nigerians in 2027.
“As we move forward, the PDP reiterates its commitment to genuine reconciliation, inclusiveness and internal cohesion. We extend an open hand to every aggrieved member, believing that the collective interest of the party is greater than individual differences and that unity remains the surest path to restoring our party to its rightful place as Nigeria’s foremost democratic platform,” it added.
“Accordingly, we seize this opportunity to warmly welcome all returning members and new defectors across the country who have recently chosen to identify once again with the ideals and vision of the Peoples Democratic Party.
“Together, we shall build a stronger and more formidable party capable of meeting the aspirations of the Nigerian people. Your decision reflects the growing confidence of Nigerians in our party as the most credible platform to rescue, rebuild and reposition our nation.”
However, the Interim National Working Committee (INWC) of the PDP, led by Dr Tanimu Turaki, said it was not bothered by INEC’s decision and was awaiting the outcome of “favourable judicial pronouncements”.
Reacting, the National Publicity Secretary, Comrade Ini Ememobong, said: “We have already said all that needed to be said. Our cases in court continue. We are not relenting because we are certain that, at the appropriate time, victory will be ours.”
