MAROKOANE SACRED GARDEN HOSTS BASOTHO NEW YEAR CULTURAL CELEBRATION

MASERU – Ultimate Radio, in partnership with Marokoane Sacred Garden, on Saturday hosted Basotho New Year “Moea oa Selemo sa Basotho”, a cultural celebration that marks the beginning of the Basotho New Year while promoting Basotho traditions, indigenous knowledge and cultural heritage.

Acting Station Director of Ultimate Radio, Mrs. Mapitso Sekete Ts’iu, said this year’s celebration marks the fourth consecutive year that the station has organised activities to commemorate the beginning of the Basotho New Year.

Mrs. Sekete-Tsiu said the event demonstrates the station’s commitment to promoting Basotho culture and educating the nation about its heritage.

She noted that as Lesotho commemorates sixty years of independence, it is important for Basotho to celebrate their identity and history through cultural events that promote national pride.

Speaking on behalf of the Area Chief of Marokoane Ha Sekete, Mr .Tanki Matamane, said the Basotho New Year traditionally begins in mid-July.

Chief Matamane explained that after the start of the new year, Basotho would prepare for the farming season by going to their fields and performing traditional practices associated with the agricultural calendar.

He said the celebration serves as a reminder for Basotho to embrace their culture and preserve traditions that have been passed down through generations.

Head of News at Lesotho Television (LTV), Ms Celina Leketeka, said the media has an important role in educating the nation on cultural and developmental issues.

Ms. Letekeka commended Ultimate Radio for organising the celebration, saying such initiatives strengthen public appreciation of Basotho culture while bringing broadcasting services closer to communities.

Owner of Marokoane Sacred Garden. Mr Setlalemarena Moshoeshoe, said the sacred site was inherited from his grandparents and has significant historical, cultural and spiritual value.

He explained that the area is known for its sacred springs and has long been associated with traditional practices, churches and historical military activities.

He said the garden is home to ten natural springs, making it one of the country’s important cultural heritage sites.

He expressed appreciation to Ultimate Radio for choosing the venue to host the celebration, adding that the event contributes to preserving Basotho customs and reminding communities of the importance of the Basotho New Year and preparations for the farming season.

The celebration marks the beginning of the Basotho New Year, traditionally observed on August 1.
