UEFA Loses Confidence In FIFA President Gianni Infantino

UEFA says it’s lost confidence in FIFA president Gianni Infantino, after he was forced to scrap a controversial plan to sell stakes in FIFA’s competitions to private investors.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino’s U-turn on a proposed sell off of stakes in FIFA competitons came Saturday, after UEFA threatened to boycott World Cups over the deal and other federations pushed back too.

UEFA called the climbdown “a victory for the whole game”, but didn’t stop there. It accused Infantino of breaking his own 2016 campaign promises on transparency, saying the deal was hatched in a “shabby, back room” and was anything but open.

Andy Burnham, Prime Minister of the UK, was the first major political leader to call for Infantino’s resignation and says FIFA made “the right decision.”

Infantino now faces mounting pressure ahead of his re-election bid at the FIFA Congress in March.
