PRESIDENT Hakainde Hichilema has congratulated Maj. Gen. Laston Ngosa on his appointment as Deputy Force Commander of the United Nations Mission in South Sudan.
State House Chief Communications Specialist Clayson Hamasaka, Hichilema said Ngosa was nominated by the Zambian government and confirmed by the UN Secretariat following a competitive process.
Ngosa will assume the post by Sept. 6, 2026, for an initial term of one year.
“When the United Nations selects a Zambian officer for one of the most demanding command roles in one of its largest missions, it is telling the world something about the professionalism and the discipline of our men and women in uniform,” Hichilema said.
The President noted Zambia’s long record in peacekeeping across Africa, from the Central African Republic to Mozambique.
“Our soldiers have served the cause of peace on this continent for decades, quietly and without seeking credit… That record was built by generations of Zambian officers before him, and Major General Ngosa now carries it into South Sudan,” he said.
Hichilema said the government and people of Zambia will give Ngosa and his family full support, and commended the Ministry of Defence, Zambia Army command and Zambia’s Permanent Mission to the UN in New York for advancing the nomination.
The statement reaffirmed Zambia’s commitment to UN peacekeeping and the deployment of Zambian personnel in support of international peace and security.
