Tajikistan and Chinese company discuss construction of waste-to-energy plant in Dushanbe

Tajikistan and the Chinese company Wangneng Environment are discussing the construction of a waste-processing and electricity-generation plant in Dushanbe.

Tajik Minister of Energy and Water Resources Daler Juma and Chairman of the Committee for Environmental Protection under the Government of Tajikistan Bahodour Sheralizoda held an online meeting with the company’s management on July 30, the Ministry of Energy and Water Resources reported.

The proposed facility would incinerate municipal solid waste and use the resulting heat to generate electricity.

According to the ministry, the project is intended to improve municipal waste management, reduce environmental pollution and increase electricity production.

Previous discussions

Tajik officials and Wangneng Environment previously discussed the project in late May, when Juma and Sheralizoda met the company’s representatives in Dushanbe.

The parties considered building a facility that would process municipal waste and generate electricity.

In early June, Sheralizoda visited Wangneng Environment’s stand at the Central Asian Environmental Exhibition in Samarkand.

According to the company, the Tajik delegation reviewed technologies for processing municipal and food waste, treating wastewater and generating electricity from waste.

About Wangneng Environment

Headquartered in the city of Huzhou in China’s Zhejiang Province, Wangneng Environment Co., Ltd. is a major Chinese environmental protection enterprise specializing in urban solid waste management and waste-to-energy power generation.  Its operations include waste incineration and power generation, food-waste and used-tire processing, wastewater treatment, waste collection and transportation, and the treatment of ash and slag left after incineration.

The company says it has implemented 21 waste-to-energy projects. Together, the facilities process more than 8.8 million tons of waste and generate about 3 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity annually.

Wangneng Environment’s project in Uzbekistan

Wangneng Environment is also involved in building a waste-incineration plant in Uzbekistan’s Bukhara region.

The facility is expected to process up to 1,500 tons of waste a day, or about 547,500 tons annually.

The project also includes a 50-megawatt power plant. Total investment is estimated at approximately 1.2 billion yuan.
