Prominent Sierra Leonean statesman and global development expert, Dr. Kandeh Kolleh Yumkella, has been appointed Patron of the West African Science Service Centre on Climate Change and Adapted Land Use (WASCAL), in recognition of his outstanding contributions to climate action, sustainable energy, and environmental sustainability across Africa.

The appointment acknowledges Dr. Yumkella’sdecades-long commitment to advancing policies and initiatives that promote clean energy, climate resilience, and sustainable development throughout the continent.

Over the years, Dr. Yumkella has held several high-profile international positions, including Director-General of the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), United Nations Under-Secretary-General, and Chief Executive Officer of Sustainable Energy for All (SEforALL).

He currently leads Sierra Leone’s Presidential Initiative on Climate Change, Renewable Energy and Food Security (PI-CREF), where he continues to champion renewable energy, food security, and climate adaptation initiatives.

His appointment as WASCAL Patron further strengthens the institution’s mission of advancing climate research, innovation, and resilience across West Africa while reinforcing Africa’s role in shaping the global climate agenda.
